The five-day Intra North South University Photography Competition and Exhibition 2009, held recently at the GMQ Tower of North South University (NSU) in Banani, managed to impress seasoned and amateur photographers, and enthusiasts alike. The exhibition, organised annually by North South University Photography Club (NSUPC), has been a platform for many aspiring photographers over the years.

This year, the opening and award-giving ceremony was inaugurated by Dr. S.A.M. Khairul Bashar, Pro Vice Chancellor of NSU, along with Hasan Shafiuddin Chandan, a renowned photographer and Shahriar Iqbal Raj, a faculty advisor on March 29.

Nineteen photographers in three categories -- People and Faces, Landscape and Architecture -- took part in the competition. Around 51 photographs were on display, vying for eight awards. Shafiqul Alam Kiron and Hasan Saifuddin Chandan were the judges.

The photographs on display seem to have captured the unique and differing aspects of the three categories, combining innovative visions incorporated with apt use of the lens.

Mirza Rajan Ferdous won both the 1st and 2nd positions in the People and faces category. Ashique Uz Zaman won the 1st position in Landscape category, followed by Ruhanul Islam in second position. Ashmeed Hossain won both the first and second positions in the Architecture category. The jury also conferred awards to Hemonto Kumar Mondol and Golam Sarwer Chowdhury.

NSUPC started its journey in 1998, with only three individuals who shared the same passion for photography. Currently, the club has a five member executive body who work under a faculty advisor. The club organises photography competitions at both national and international levels, and encourages amateur photo enthusiasts to participate, facilitating them to improve their knowledge in the medium.

The exhibition ended on April 2.
